Gender Impacts Science in Unexpected Ways

Maddie O'Brien, 22 (NIH, neuroscience)

Gender issues don't only matter for scientists - they can matter for experimental subjects, too.

In human studies such as IQ tests, pain medication studies, and more the scientist's gender can have varying influences on participants' responses. The same is true for scientists working with rodents.

So what can be done? Some suggest that scientists should reporting the gender of the people conducting the experiments, as a start.

This also makes a strong case for gender diversity in the sciences - the more balanced the genders are in the sciences, the less this effect might impact study outcomes. Read more about it here.
