Professor and Chairman, Department of Neurological Surgery

Currently active research areas include:

  • engineering more efficient "tumor-killing" vectors
  • finding and testing novel prodrug/gene therapy strategies
  • defining more selective oncolytic viruses
  • characterizing the ability of bone marrow stem cells to “transdifferentiate” into tumor blood vessels or neurons in response to environmental stimuli
  • defining the role of the immune response in vector delivery of therapeutic molecules in tumors and in animal models of cerebral ischemia
  • developing models of gene transfer to ameliorate cerebrovascular ischemia
  • conducting functional genomic studies of neurodegenerative disease using our iBAC system
