Dr. Amer’s laboratory performs innovative translational research on a variety of human diseases through the perspective of innate immunity and cell biology. The lab has been focused on the role of the inflammasome and autophagy in several conditions including cystic fibrosis, pneumonia-causing bacteria, Covid-19 infection, E-cigarette and vaping associated lung injury (EVALI), and neuro-degenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease. Dr. Amer is an expert in innate immunity and the utilization of animal models for disease conditions. Dr. Amer has a strong commitment to working with trainees of varying interests and expertise to ensure a successful and productive training experience for the members of her lab. She trains and encourages her lab members to work cohesively in group projects while also motivating individuals in her lab to work independently on individual projects. As a result of this strategy, Dr. Amer’s trainees leave with numerous complementary skills and several publications.

Dr. Amer has been continuously funded by the NIH which she attributes to the quality of her trainees, the talented collaborators and ground-breaking research.
