Neuroscience Student Recognized by Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program

Alexis Crockett

Junior neuroscience major, Alexis Crockett, has been named as a 2015 Goldwater Scholar. The Goldwater is the most prestigious national award for undergraduate researchers in science, math and engineering. Goldwater Scholars receive an award to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500.

Alexis Crockett is investigating the effects of the antihypertensive and antidepressant agent ketanserin on chronic neuroinflammation, a potential contributor to Major Depressive Disorder, in the behavioral neuroscience lab of Dr. Gary Wenk. Her previous work in the lab culminated in a poster presentation at the 2014 Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting and co-authorship on three publications in the journals Neuroscience and Brain, Behavior & Immunity. This summer, she will continue her studies on the neurobiology of depression as a DAAD RISE intern at the Karlsruher Institut Für Technologie in Erlangen, Germany. An Eminence Fellow, Alexis is active in neuroscience and STEM educational outreach on campus and in the Columbus community. After obtaining a PhD in neuroscience, she will seek a faculty position at a research university in order to study the pathophysiology of depression and contribute to the development of more effective antidepressants.
